SUBJ: | Thoughts & Prayers – Passing of the Holy Father, Pope Francis |
DATE: | April 21, 2025 |
Today, as we reflect upon the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, whose leadership has touched the hearts of millions around the world, we give thanks for his life of love, compassion, and generous service. As a Catholic, Jesuit and humanistic institution, we are especially grateful to Pope Francis for his modeling of the values of humility, mercy, solidarity with the poor and vulnerable, and his relentless advocacy for peace and justice, and an end to violence in our world.
Pope Francis — the first Jesuit pope in history as well as the first from South America — inspired millions of Catholics and others with his humility and emphasis on simplicity. He led with compassion and an appeal to conscience: urging us to care for our common home, to embrace mercy over judgment, and to seek peace amidst conflict. His leadership during his papacy was marked by a consistent call for reform within the Church, an unwavering appeal to human dignity, and a profound dedication to interfaith dialogue and understanding.
His legacy will be forever shaped by his advocacy for those most in need, his global efforts to underscore humanity’s obligation to care for the planet, and his appeals to human cooperation. Pope Francis constantly reminded us that the Gospel calls us to be servants to one another, seeking justice for the oppressed and living lives of simplicity and grace.
As we mourn this loss, let us remember the example he set for all of us. Let us hold the Church, the Holy See, and the many people who were touched by his life in our prayers. May we carry forward the principles he championed — compassion, mercy, and a deep commitment to serving the common good.
We extend our deepest condolences to the Della Strada Jesuit Community, the Catholic community worldwide and to all who mourn the loss of Pope Francis. May God grant him eternal rest.
