In the Christian tradition, each Lenten season offers an opportunity both to reflect on our human weaknesses and shortcomings, as well as the many blessings in our lives. Through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, it is a time of renewal and preparation for the commemoration of Christ’s Resurrection.
We live at a time and in a world marked by disruption, instability, and uncertainty. In the face of destabilizing forces, it can be difficult to know how best to proceed. The season of Lent reminds us that Jesus’ Gospel message is a message of love, and a message of hope. As community, we are called to embody love at the core of our shared humanity—nurturing a spirit of care and compassion for one another.
Holy Thursday marks the ending of Lent and the beginning of the Paschal Triduum, the three-day period when Christians commemorate the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus. It is no coincidence that the Lenten season, culminating in the glorious celebration of Easter, coincides with the season of spring—an embodiment of new life and fresh beginnings.
This time of renewal is similarly reflective of the recently celebrated Muslim festival of Eid al-Fitr (at the conclusion of Ramadan), and is interconnected with the Jewish holiday of Passover, which is currently being celebrated and commemorates God’s deliverance of the Jewish people from slavery in ancient Egypt.
May this Holy season bring with it a recognition and reaffirmation of our own capacity to be people of hope for each other. May we seek and find joy in the promise of spring: a time of renewal and new opportunities to nurture, grow and learn together. I pray that this Holy weekend brings many blessings to you, your families, and your loved ones. For those traveling this weekend – please travel safely. Happy Easter!
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." - John 3:16
